Merry Christmas, everyone. Happy Birthday, Jesus!

We met at Darlene's cousin's violin concert 10 years ago, and the next week, Darlene, Peter, Jennifer, Philip, Stephen and I went to Hotpot City together, and after that, we started writing the emails, and after that.......you know.
Darlene's mom is my parents' good friend, so we invited them, too. Besides that, we met one of Stephen's previous officemate at 天道書樓,and we invited him as well.
It was a nice gathering. My father made all different kinds of good dipping sauces , and Darlene made a delicious Grape Pie which Ha loved it so much and asked her for the recipe. We also had good sharing time. We thank God for these wonderful relatives and friends.

2009 thanksgiving

The most memorable thing in this Thanksgiving was that I prepared the turkey. We were having the party at my brother-in-law's house; however, their oven was broken, so they thought of coming to our house to cook the turkey. It's not feasible to have them come back and forth during the long cooking period, so I offered to cook the big bird which I haven't done it for quite a few years. No problem. I have a 賢惠的 friend, and we had juicy and tasty turkey at her house last year, so I emailed her a "SOS", and asked for help. She gave me detailed instructions, and the turkey turned out to be better than I expected..I'll say..pretty good; at least, I loved it. When I have time, I'm going to post the recipe on my other website: http://happyfamilyandfriendskitchen.blogspot.com/

My parents were in my house during the Thanksgiving, and they helped us to assemble the headboard for Ha's bed on Friday. Then, we had a lunch at Hotpot City. It's usually expensive, but it's cheaper on weekday lunch hours. Ha and Hee liked the experience of "火烤兩吃”, and I liked 刨冰 the best. We also tried to get some ideas for the 認識10周年hotpot party at our house on 12/5 (which I will write it later when I have time.). In the afternoon, we went to SFO to pick up 2 girls from Taiwan. Ha, Hee, Stephen and my dad went for the free air train rides while Mom and I were waiting for the girls. Kids had a lot of fun just by riding the air trains back and forth for a few times. We went for a little SF tour trying to get them to the hotel, had a dinner together in SF and went home.

On Sat., we went to Vasona Park for biking(actually, we also went biking at Lake Elizabeth on Thursday before I worked on the turkey). Biking, biking, everywhere! Well, Ha and Hee went biking , and we were jogging after them. It's a very good exercise.

That's about it. Here is a photo movie. Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDFs_TfYYVI

Hee's class: Thanksgiving Music Program-11/24/09

Usually, they don't wear pajamas at home, and after shower, they just wear whatever they are going to wear for the next day, so they don't have to change the clothes again in the cold morning. I helped them to pick the clothes which "look like" pajamas for this special day.
Kindergarten classes prepared a 30-min music program with about 6 or 7 songs, and kids wore different kinds of hats: turkey, indians and pilgrims. Hee was a little Indian.
Here is the video clip for one of the songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAOXE8lhMWc

11/21 Ice Skating

We've been riding the bike at Stanford for several weeks, and kids and I started getting bored. What else can we do? Stephen got an idea: Ice skating! Ha loved it, so he was the first one agreed to go, and Hee was ok later. How about me? To be honest, I'm not really interested in ice skating, and I needed to cook a dish for church's Thanksgiving sharing potluck; also, I needed to buy a turkey for Thursday's gathering, so they went first, and I went there later to be the photographer only.
Ha was able to skate by himself even though he fell sometimes. Hee needed to be held by Stephen, and he was having fun, too. Here are some video clips:

Hee said that he was hungry, so I brought him to the car to have some snack, and we went to Safeway to get the turkey, and Ha and Stephen were still there skating.

When Hee and I went home, it was quiet, and Ha asked us to keep quiet because "Daddy is sleeping". What? Why? Ha told me that Daddy just hit his right arm on the ice and he's hurt because he tried to avoid bumping into a person who suddenly stopped at the doorway and he fell. I went to check on him, and he seemed to be in pain, so I asked him to go to the doctor. Luckily, the doctor was still there at 5:30pm on Saturday, and he said that Stephen almost broke his arm, but luckily, he didn't. Stephen could hardly sleep because of the pain, but thank God that he had a rapid recovery overnight. He could even join the practice for the Christmas program on Sunday afternoon. We need to give thanks to God because he heard our and other brothers' and sisters' prayers. His arm is not 100% ok yet, and it takes time to recover; however, he is ok to deal with everyday life with both of his hands now.

10/31 Harvest Day

Every year, when it's close to 10/31, Ha and Hee's school has halloween parade, and kids can wear costumes to school. Long time ago, I told them that halloween sometimes connects with ghost and evil spirit, and our God doesn't like us to associate with these things; therefore, as Christian, we'd better not to celebrate halloween. Both of them chose not to wear the costumes to school because they love God, and I let them wear "handsome clothes" which they never wore to school.
Of course, they didn't go to treat or trick; instead, we went to the harvest night in the church. It's getting better and better each year, and they got a lot of candies and had a lot of fun! In the photo, after playing 5 games in one round, you could get a cotton candy, and Ha was enjoying it. Hee was working hard at rolling a big, unbalanced pumpkin. He finished the first round of all 10 games and started the second round, and he got 2 cotton candies at that night! With so much fun, nobody cared about treat or trick.

My Birthday Parties

There are 2 parties: one was on my birthday with Stephen, Ha and Hee, and the other one was in November with my parents and sister's family. We also celebrated my Dad and my brother-in-law, Philip's birthday on the same day.

On my birthday, I got an e-card, a birthday cake, a pressure cooker (which I have started using it before the birthday)and 5 clothes. Stephen wasn't very sure about my size, so he tried those clothes on in the store by himself because our sizes are similar. Just imaging the scene that a man trying the woman clothes in the store is very touching, and it is the best gift that I can ever ask for.

Also, this was the first birthday after I joined Facebook. I got many birthday greetings from my relatives and friends. Thank you everyone, I love you all! From the mail, I got a I-House gift card from my sister, Sophia, and we will definitely try it some day.

In Elk Grove, it was a great party, too. I got a gift card from my mom, and a beautiful necklace and a huge giant umbrella from my sister. All four people in my family should be able to fit under the umbrella. It will be a great life saver during the storm day.

10/24/99 was the day that Stephen and I first met each other, and this year was our 10th year being together. Only 10 years? How come I felt that I've known him forever?

In the past 9 years, we never celebrated this day, but 今年擴大慶祝。 Stephen bought roses and 香檳, and we drank little after the kids went to sleep. This year, since 10/24 was a Sat., after dinner, we decided to go back to the place that we first met: Stanford University....10 years ago, we went to a violin concert there, and through friends' help, we started knowing each other better.

It only took about 15 to 20 minutes to get there from our house, but since it's dark, it took us longer to find the entrance. Hee fell asleep in the car, and Ha was excited to be able to ride the bike in the campus. Stephen held Hee, Ha rode the bike, and I walked until almost 10pm . The second day, we went there again, and both kids rode their bikes. Now, biking is one of their favorite activities, and Stanford is one of the best place for biking, so, we went there again last week, and I predict that we will go there many times in the future and we will have many more 10 years of happy days ahead of us .
I'll upload the photos to slideshow later. http://picasaweb.google.com/happyfamily.huang/102409#

Playing Together

These few months, these 2 brothers had more and more time playing together. Few weeks ago, they liked to build boats and played while taking the bath. Now, they loved to use blocks to build the buildings and invited their stuffed animal friends to the party. Still, Ha was the leader, and Hee loved to be a follower, so most of the time, they played happily together.

10/13-Stormy Day

From the weather forecast, we knew that 10/13 would be a stormy day; therefore, on 10/12, after work, Stephen went up to the roof to clean up the gutter and leaves, and I found all of our umbrellas. We were ready for and excited about the storm.

10/13 morning, we saw fallen leaves all over the backyard ground; big rain and wind were here! The street was little flooded, but it's not too bad. I needed to carry Hee in few areas when the water was too deep for him to walk by without wetting his shoes. After taking Hee to school, I came home to finish some work, and at 11am, I went to the market to get groceries for this week. ( I have classes on Mon. and Wed, and volunteer at Hee's class on Friday, so I only have free time on Tues. and Thurs to get the groceries.)

Umbrella was not working well on this kind of stormy day because the wind was too strong. On the way from store to Hee's school, my car was out of control for a few seconds (maybe because of the wet road). Luckily, there's no car around me. God was keeping His eyes on me.

Hee and I went home after school, but the garage couldn't be opened..ohh, we had the power outage. Since Hee had a keyboard class at 1pm, I grabbed his music book and drove to the community center and had bread (which I just got from the store) as our lunch there because our stove, oven, and Microwave couldn't work, so we couldn't have hot lunch. Thank God that I went out at 11am instead of 12pm; otherwise, my car wouldn't be able to be driven out of the garage, and how am I going to pick up Hee? Also thank God that I washed the clothes before I went out, so the clothes were washed clean before the power outage. I called Stephen and asked him to report the power outage to PG & E, and we went to the music class, and then we went to pick up Ha.

Hee was so excited to tell Ha that we got power outage, and Ha was so excited, too. Since we were all wet (as I said, umbrella didn't work well on the stormy day), we all took a shower when it's still bright. Then, we took out all the candles (actually, it's better not to use the candles, but for fun, we just used it for a while) and flashlights, and I found a brighter spot for Ha to do his homework. I told him that he needed to do it as soon as possible because it would be dark at any time, and he wouldn't be able to do the work then. It reminded me that Jesus will come at anytime, and if we don't spend our time wisely on the things that God wants us to do, we may lose the opportunity to do them forever.

We got the power back at 6pm, but we still went out to eat and had a candlelight fruit break as planned, and we turned off all the lights to let Ha and Hee use flashlights while brushing their teeth. To me, it's a fun day.

Moon Festival Gathering

This year, our group leader suggested that we could have a moon festival gathering on Sat. , 10/3, so we opened our house and hoped that we could watch the moon in our backyard. However, it was really cold on that day, so we were unable to go to the backyard.

I need to post 2 photos because there were some people got cut off in either one.

And I was not in either one, so here I am! Well, we still missed few people; for example, Hee was too busy at playing to come to the photo section. Of course, we had 2 boxes of moon cakes, but we were too full to eat the moon cakes, so there were still some leftovers.

Adults enjoyed eating and each other's company, and kids played by themselves very well. Now, Ha asked me almost every day: When are they going to come again?

9/26/09: Garage Sale, Old Car show and Aquarium

Every year, Cupertino has a city-wide garage sale in Fall, and this year, it was on 9/26 and 9/27. Our house was not located in the convenient area, and very few people would pass by (unless they got lost), so it's not possible that we could get a lot of "customers". Stephen was more "result oriented", so he didn't like to hold the garage sale; I was more "process oriented", so I enjoyed the process of getting the unused items out , prepared for the sales and putting on the signs; 2 kids were also excited about it and digged out their old toys, and it's a unique experience for them. Since only one people was against the sale, and three people were for it, we had the short garage sale on Sat. from 10 to 12.

As we predicted, there were not many people here, but still, we sold about 4 things for $5.75 in total.

After we had lunch, we decided to go to Monteray Bay Aquarium because we have membership, and we should go there as often as possible to make the money well spent. It's about one and a half hour driving distance from our house, so it's not too bad.

When we went there, we saw a lot of old cars on the street in front of the Aquarium, so I asked one of the volunteers there, and she told me that it's a charitable car show. Even though those cars were old, they all had beautiful and bright engines, and they all looked like new. I guessed that the owners of the cars must have spent a fortune toward the cars.
Video Clips:

Then, we went to the Aquarium and stayed till they closed. My camera was out of battery, so I couldn't take more pictures.

Chicken Dance

Every year, Cueprtino has a fall festival, and all the kindergarteners took turns to perform chicken dances. Ha was there 2 years ago, and this year, Hee got his turn to join it. Their school got the spot from 11:40am to 11:55am, and we went there early in order to check out other booths.

Here are some video clips of chicken dance:

More kids

Last night, we went to YMCA to swim. After swimming, as usual, I took a quick shower and read magazines in the waiting area while waiting for the 3 boys. I met a friend from the church, and he told me that every time, when their family came to swim, he read the magazines while waiting for his wife and 2 daughters. The waiting time usually ranges from 10 minutes to 20 minutes.

When the 3 boys came out, I told them that I was lucky to have boys instead of girls, but Ha and Hee told me that I should have a girl or more girls, so it will be fair. The following was our conversation:

Kids:
Kids:
Y: don't worry,
Hee: 爸爸 do something to 媽媽就會有了!
Y: mmm.....
Hee:
Y:..........

First "complete" movie experience

In Spring, when we went to a mall, Ha saw a movie poster: Cloudy with the chance of Meatballs, and he told us that he read that book at school, and he wanted to see that movie. Prior to this, we only had 2 "imcompleted" movie experience. The first time, after 10 minutes, Ha and Hee wanted to get out. The second time, it was better, we stayed about an hour. Fortunately, Stephen's company offered free tickets for those 2 movies, so moneywise, it was not too bad.

Finally, the movie that we were waiting for was in theater this week, so we got the tickets and ready to go. At the beginning, Hee was not very interested in watching it, but since Ha wanted to go, and Ha told him many times that it's not scary but funny, so he agreed to go, too. Ha finished his homework just in time for us to go to the 11:10am movie, and when we got into the room, the commercial was over, and the movie was ready to start. It was all dark, and Hee refused to get in, but seeing the cute 3D characters, and with Stephen's promise to hold him throughout the movie, he finally agreed to sit down and watch.

Personally, I thought that it's an ok movie, and Hee and Ha thought that it was ok, too. (not excellent). The main character is an inventor, and after many useless invention, he invented "food rain" to save his city; however the rain was out of control, so he tried to stop it. I really liked the idea of having "ice cream rain", so when I want to eat ice cream, I just go outside.

After movie, we went to Fresh Choice. With the same day movie tickets, adults can get $1.50 off, not bad!

My Shy Son

Ha is very very shy, not only to the outsiders, but to us as well, sometimes.

One day, I heard that he sang in his room, so I tried to video tape it, but he insisted turning his back to my camera, oh well.......It's a little better now because before, he even stopped singing right away when I was there.

He bought a MP3 himself (less than $20. I told him that he has a CD player, so I'm not going to buy MP3 for him. If he really really wants it, he needs to pay his own money for it.), and asked me to download songs from internet for him; therefore, I downloaded some free Christian songs for him. I've never heard those songs before, but I guessed that he enjoyed them.

Here is the video clip that I took...without his face for the whole song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMwhctajUhM

Today, I was volunteering in his class, and during recess time, one of his classmates tried to play the ball with Ha ( that boy looked shy, too), but Ha played with him for few minutes and then tried to stay away from him again. On lunch time, that same boy sat beside Ha, but Ha only talked to him for very few words and turned his head away from that boy and concentrated on eating. I really hoped that he can be socialized a little bit more.

Biking update

Ha got a new bike because his old bike was too high, and his feet couldn't reach the ground. When he learned 2-wheel biking, he used Hee's bike, but now, when he wanted to take out the training wheels of his bike, it's a little bit dangerous (Hee's bike is 12 inch, Ha's old bike is 18 inches); therefore, we bought a 16 inch bike for him. We didn't put on the training wheel because he didn't need it any more.

Hee was 99.5% ok. He just needed a little help when going uphill because he was not strong enough to make it through.

I started practicing making short turns, and I was making the progress, too. Stephen has been riding the bike for 20-30 years, so it's too easy for him.

Ha's homework and Hee's swimming breaking through day

I thought that we would stop going swimming on weekday nights after Ha has homework because he was usually very slow at doing his homework. Yesterday, Ha brought his homework home. In 2nd grade, they had a homework calendar, and each day, they needed to finish the homework based on the homework calendar that the teacher assigned. Normally, it will be 20 minutes spelling and math homework and 20 minutes reading time each day. I don't worry about the reading time because Ha likes to read, and he reads every day even when nobody asks him to. However, asking him to write the homework was my headache for Ha's kindergarten and 1st grade. He's so slow and not very concentrated, and I needed to call him many times before he started doing his homework.

Yesterday, after he had snack, I asked him to do the homework. I introduced him the timer, and I told him that the teacher said that the homework could be done in 20 minutes, so let's try to see if what she said was true. Also, if he could finish his homework early, we could go swimming at night. He was very interested in the "timer" idea, so he did his best to do his homework without asking for water, without walking to the living room, without playing with his pencil, and he finished his homework in 17 minutes. He was so happy, and I kept my promise, so we had an early dinner and went to YMCA at night.

Ha loved to swim, and even though he's still in 狗爬式,he had no problem at 換氣。In the pool, he was very relaxing and exciting. Hee was afraid to put his head in, but he liked to play in the water, too, so every night, he loved to go along. Last night, Ha asked him if he wanted to see some strange creature down in the water, and Hee immediately put his mouth, nose, eyes and forehead into the water without the second thought, and from that moment on, Hee was ok to put his face into the water, but he was not ready to put the whole head in yet. However, it's still a good break through for Hee. Now, Hee called Ha his swimming coach, and I believed that Ha will do the trick for Hee to put his whole head in in the near future.

Labor Day Weekend

This weekend, AWANA had a camping activity in a far away place, and it would take 3 and a half hours to drive there. We were not so fond of long distance driving, but Ha and Hee wanted to go camping, so we invited few families to have a camping at our backyard. Camping with friends always had more fun than camping alone. We set up the tents on Friday night, and our lawn was good for 3 tents; two 8 people tent and one smaller one. Kids were so excited, and of course, we roasted marshmallows after dinner because it's Ha's special request.

Saturday morning, after breakfast, we drove to Capitola, which was about 45 minutes away from our house, and it's close to Santa Cruz. This long weekend, it had a Begonia Festival and had sand sculpture contest. We brought our sand tools (toys) and a big shovel and went there. We got off from Hwy 1, Bay Road exit and parked on the free street parking and took their shuttle to the beach. Many people had already started their sculpture (it started at 8, but we arrived at 11pm), and many of them looked professional. We registered for the contest, but we knew that there's no way that we would win the prize, so we mainly just tried to have fun.
Sunday morning, we went on a short hike with my brother & sister-in-law; Sunday afternoon, after Sunday Service, we went to visit the new building that our church just bought. It was huge, and I pray that God helped us to make the best use of this building.
On Monday, we did the two activities that we do every weekend: biking and swimming. This week, Hee was able to ride a short distance by himself when Stephen was not holding, and I am pretty sure that next week, he should be able to do it all alone. I will remember to bring the camera next week.
I had a short video clip for the sand castle contest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tArOAJb3gds

Fire Drill

This morning, I helped in Hee's classroom. They have about 26 kids in a class; 16 kids go to school from 9am to 12:25pm; 10 kids are from 10:55am to 3:05pm, so they are overlapped from 10:55am to 12:25pm, and the teacher welcomes parents volunteers to help out in the classroom.

Today, there's a fire drill, and it's my first time to join the fire drill at school in the US. The teacher explained very clearly before the drill, so the kids fully understood what they were supposed to do. When the bell rang, the teacher asked kids to cover their ears because the bell was very loud. By doing that, kids didn't talk, either because everyone covered their ears, and nobody could hear others anyways. Within few minutes, all the kids gathered in the field quietly. It amazed me that all 600+ kids could be there in good order and without making any noises. I believed that they will be doing fine when the real thing happens.

There's a floor fountain in front of Cupertino Library and City Hall, and we went there 2 years ago when we just moved here; however, it was closed afterwards for repair. It reopened this August, so before the school started, I brought Ha and Hee to play with the water. They had so much fun there! At first, Hee was afraid of going in, but later, he enjoyed it, too. I also liked to play with the water, but since there's no adult playing there,

I got 2 video clips:

Hee was afraid to get in, so Ha shot the water at him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFkeNunQgXk
Ha pretended to cut down the tree, Hee 則是一路從頭笑and叫到尾: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy9KaRKABug

It's the first day of Ha's 2nd grade and Hee's kindergarten year. In the morning, Hee told me that he didn't want to go to school, but later, he acted better than I thought. Neither Stephen nor I wanted to miss their first day of school, so we drove 2 cars to school (so Stephen could go to work directly). The parking was so hard! I guessed that every parent didn't want to miss their children's first day of school. I imagined that it would be bad if we needed to say good-bye at the doorway to Hee, and he would definitely cry. Fortunately, Hee's teacher (who's also Ha's kindergarten teacher) was experienced, and she asked parents to go into the classroom with the kids. After all the kids were settled in their spots, she asked kids to say good bye to parents together. Hee was ok with that. He has a preschool classmate in his class ( Hee said that he did say hi to her today), and I knew a girl from our church's VBS.
At noon, I went to pick up Hee. Ha's lunch area was just in front of Hee's classroom, so I was able to see him as well. Both told me that they were doing good on the first day of school, and they seemed happy.
Ha knew his teacher when he was in kindergarten, and he had 2 people who was in the same kindergarten class with him; however, none of his first grade classmates is in his 2nd grade class. He can only see them during recess and lunch time. Hopefully, he can make friends soon.

Raspberry

When Ha was in the first grade, his teacher taught them to plant the potato, so he asked me to get a potato from the market for him to plant. We cut it in half and put them in the water, and at the end, one got sprout and the other one died. Ha planted the good one in our backyard, and it started having a lot of leaves. We are not professional farmers, so we didn't know a lot about planting the potatoes, and we didn't know when to harvest, so we just left them there. One day, I found a very tiny potato, and I thought that the potato plant was not good because it only grew tiny ones. I tried to dig the whole thing out and plant some other vegetables, and while I was digging, bigger potatoes came out! However, the biggest ones got sprout again, so I put them back under the ground because we couldn't eat the potato with sprouts. That night, I cooked our potatoes, our one and only carrot and some meat, and we enjoyed that dish very much because it was from our backyard.
This week, every night, Ha made smoothies for us. In the afternoon, he cut apples, peaches, golden kiwi, our pears into small pieces and put them in fridge. At night, we blended his mixed fruit and our raspberries and yogurt ,and each one can drink a cup of smoothies. Our raspberries are really good because Ha bought a little plant in 2008 for about $2, and it just grew into many many many many plants by itself. Now, we have more than 20 raspberry plants, big and small, and every day, we are able to eat fresh raspberries.
Ha really got green fingers. One of his sunflowers is taller than I am. I'll take a picture of it later.

This summer (after Ha's summer school ended), every weekday night and Sat. afternoon, we go to YMCA to swim, and every Saturday morning, we go to Memorial park to learn biking.

Ha and Hee have been riding on the 4-wheel bikes for few years, and we thought that it's about time for Ha to take off the training wheels. Since Ha's bike is high, and his feet can hardly touch the ground, we decided to use Hee's bike for them to learn for now, and Hee can learn it, too.

Stephen was the main coach 在後面幫他們扶車推車, and I was the 啦啦隊,在前面搖旗吶喊,要他們騎過來追我。They have made good progress, and last Saturday (8/15), Ha already can ride a short distance without people's help. Hee's was doing good, too, but Stephen still needed to help him a little. I forgot to bring my camera to the park, and I hope that I will remember to bring it this weekend to capture this memorable milestone in their lives.

Milpitas Library

Milpitas Library was rebuilt after we moved away from Milpitas, so we haven't got the opportunity to visit the new library. Since it was close to Great Mall, we decided to go there on the same day when we visited the Great Mall.

It was huge and beautiful, and it's about 3 times bigger than the Cupertino Library. I really loved it! It also had very comfortable reading area, so we spent 2 hours there...just read the books. It's kids-friendly because it's not very quiet, and kids could talk and ask questions whenever they wanted without feeling embarrassed of disturbing other people.

Great Mall

When Hee was just born, and Ha was little, we went to Great Mall very often, so Hee could get a nap in the stroller, and Ha wouldn't be bored at home. When they grew older, we didn't go there as often, and after we moved away from Milpitas, we went there rarely.

During this summer vacation, we have been to Great Mall several times already because they were interested in using walkie talkie, and Great Mall is a good and big place to try their walkie talkies. They held one walkie talkie, and I held another one, and we tried to find each other. Actually, it's not hard at all because they were still afraid of getting lost and wouldn't run far away from me.

We usually bring some yogurt, cheese and chicken nuggets and buy some bread from the bakery as our lunch, and after lunch, we walk round the whole circle of the Great Mall..good exercise.

Swimming

Ha and Hee loved swimming, but they didn't like to go to the class, so we go to YMCA every available weekday nights and weekends. Ha is not afraid of water anymore, so it's not a big problem for him to put his head under the water; however, he didn't know how to 換氣yet, so he needed to stand up when he's out of the air. Also, he is still swimming in the 狗爬式,so we will adjust it later. Hee had fun in the water, but he still refused to put his head in the water. He's making the progress gradually. In the beginning, he didn't even like any water on his face, but now, he's ok if I splashed his face with water.

While they were learning swimming, I practiced my skill as well. I learned to swim because there's a swimming test in our high school PE class, and I never really liked to swim myself; furthermore, I never thought that I would swim after I graduated from high school. However, since we needed to take care of our sons in the water, both of Stephen and I needed to get in the pool, and after we go to YMCA almost every day, I started to like it, and I found that I was better than ever.

After swimming, we all took a shower in YMCA, and kids could go to bed directly after the bedtime story. Not bad!

大餐

We left our parents' house around 10am on Sat. morning, and my mom needed to have a short stop in Oakland, so by the time we got home, it's about 1pm. My mom said that we could stop in Milpitas and buy some food home for lunch, but I thought that it would take longer time, so I asked Stephen to buy something to eat for us.

When we got home, we found whole table of food; however, it was not bought from the restaurant, but cooked by my husband: 香煎豬肉,橙汁烤雞排,魚片,裝飾美麗的荷包蛋,大白菜炒小蝦仁,還有一鍋湯。Very nice.

Going to Grandma's House

Last Monday, my Dad came to our house to pick us up. We stopped by my grandpa 's 墓地 first, and then we headed to my parents' house. We stayed there until Saturday.

During these days, we had Japenese Buffet, went to Chuck E Cheeses, Flea/Farmer's Market, Hometown Buffet, park, went to Ro's swimming lesson, had a lot of fun in the backyard, and went to Jennifer's house to celebrate my Mom's birthday. Stephen needed to work, so he couldn't come with us.

7/21 Sea World

Sophia's family came to our hotel in the morning, so we could go to Sea World together. They have been there so many times, but they still made time to go with us on their last day in San Diego...thank you!

With “本地人”Sophia and Ran as our special tour guides, we moved easily from one show site to another without reading the map.

We went to : Shamu (day and night), dolphin, Sea Lion, Pet's rule, Cirque de la Mer---shows

Tip Tide----nighttime stage show presented by musicians, dancers and athletes

Sesame Street---4D movie

Water play area, play structures, and a rollover lawn

and we watched the firework after Shamu show at night.

We went there at 11am, and we left at around 10pm. It was a long and fun day. Ran's parents came to join us at 5pm.

I really enjoyed all the shows. Each one was different, but yet, each one was very entertaining and attracted all our attentions. Almost all the shows had a "splash zone" meaning that when you sit on that zone, there's a good chance that you are going to get wet. Ha insisted in sitting in this zone, so we took turns to sit with him. Personally, I liked that zone, too, and Sophia sat in that zone many times as well. Hee was not very into the water thing, so he always sat far away from the stage.

Our seats got better and better one show after the other. During the Cirque de la Mar show, we couldn't find good seats, then we saw some seats close to the stage, but they were marked as "platinum member only". Since the show was about to start, the staff allowed us to sit on those seats, and we watched the show clearly. Our last show was Shamu Rocks. Again, it's all packed. Since there's no hope for the splash zone, we tried the seats upstairs, but they were reserved, so we went down again. Finally, we saw few empty seat in the splash zone, so Ha, Sophia and I went to sit down. After we settled down, we realized that our seats were ones of the best seats. It was the 2nd row on the middle of the stage where Shamu would be on. We were super excited, and when you watched the video clip, you would definitely hear our voices: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbZ_I7N32rE I didn't take out my camera in time, so the clip was short. I hid by camera under the raincoat, and I only took it out when I was sure that there wouldn't be any more splash.

Two other video clip: Water playing area: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTl5rb7XPd8

Rolling down the hill: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CXfMQjbux8

I felt that Seaworld was a "must-go" in San Diego trip.

Thank God for keeping us safe and happy, and we were very grateful for this trip.

7/20 Legoland

After one hour driving from the hotel, we arrived Legoland before 11am. It is a cute place for kids to play because many things were made of Legos or "look like" making from Legos.

Before we went, Hee and I had visited their website for online map and ride introduction to pick up the rides that we would be interested and arranged the routes, so we could skip the routes that we were not interested in and saved some time.

Few minutes after getting in, we saw our first target: Safari Trek. It looked like a train ride, and my 膽小的 kids and I might enjoy. It was about 45 minute waiting time, but the line was not really long, so we got in anyways. It's shorter than 45 minutes, might be only 30 minutes. Kids were doing fine at waiting. Finally, it's our turn to ride, we were so excited; however, the ride was over in less than 5 minutes. I couldn't believe that the ride was so short! It's not worthy to stay 30 minutes in line for this ride.

Then, we went to music fountain. The instruments would play the music only when people stepped on them. Watch a video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWVDSH_eJ54

We've heard of Volvo Driving School from a friend before we visited, so I had told Ha about it, and he wanted to try. Hee was too young for the Driving School, but he didn't want to go to Junior Driving School alone, so he didn't go. In the Driving School, Ha drove the car alone; stepped on gas or brake; stopped at red lights and stop signs, and it was like real driving with other kids on the mini streets. He was doing very well, but again, the time was too short. Fortunately, except for the first ride (Safari Trek), the waiting line was not too long. When they got out of the car, we saw Ha walking toward a girl's car and was helping her with something. Such a gentleman! Later, he told us that the girl didn't know how to untie the seatbelt, so he helped her. Ha loved this ride very much!

Then, we had a lunch at one of the dining centers. After lunch, we went for the factory tour, but again, it's short and it's not very interesting.

Skipper school was a big hit of our day! Kids drove and controlled the boat in a small lake, and parents sat beside them. The lake was not too big, so I didn't expect that it would be a long ride based on the previous experiences of other rides. Ha controlled my boat, and Hee controlled Stephen's boat. It was ok when we just started, and things got funnier and funnier when a little baby driver joined the mess. A video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY7Tn59Y_us
I had so much fun on this ride!!!

On our way to another area, I saw Splash Battle: A family of 4 were on the same boat with water guns to shot other boat and 路人,and 路人 had water gun to shot them as well. Stephen didn't want us to get too wet, so we didn't take the ride, but personally, I thought that it would be a fun ride, too.

Then, we went to Miniland USA. They made a lot of famous buildings by lego blocks. Here were few of them: San Francisco http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXI8LfmzQXY; Los Angeles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtcQKbJGJ2g. We took a Coast Cruise ride to visit the miniland, and it was a longer ride, and we saw some famous buildings in other countries as well.

We also went to Imagination Zone where kids could play with the legos. In Build & Test room, Ha and Hee made lego cars and raced with other kids' cars. Their cars were pretty good. At last, we went to watch a 4D Bob the Builder show. We didn't tell Hee to watch a "movie"; otherwise, he wouldn't go in. We just told him that we were going to watch Bob the Builder, so he went in happily. It was fun, but there were not really many 4D effects in the show. I only saw some fake snow flakes at the end.

Since we were going to have a dinner with Ran's parents, we left Legoland around 4pm. Even though we hadn't finished all the rides that we planned to, we had fun!

Dinner was in San Diego with Sophia's family and Ran's parents. His parents ordered many delicious dishes, and we were so full! Kids also had fun playing and chasing in the room.

7/19 Swimming in the Hotel

After Getty Center, we planned to visit Santa Monica Beach; however, it was about 2pm, and the Sun would be too harmful for our skin, so we decided to go to our hotel first. After a hour of driving, we arrived the hotel; however, when we entered our room, we found that it only had a king bed and a pull-out sofa bed, so we requested a double Queen bed room. The customer service, Becky was patient and nice, and we got the room that we wanted. Then, we explored everything in our room and the area around our room; finally, we were ready to swim at 5pm.

We were the only family in the pool for the most of the time, so we had a lot of fun. Ha could 憋氣 and swim for a short distance, but he hadn't figured out how to 換氣. Hee was still afraid of water, but with Stephen, he enjoyed the time in the water, too.

When it's getting cold, we used the warm spa. Kids were excited about feeling the bubbles coming out of the small holes.

7/19 Getty Center

Getty Center is a museum with marvelus architectures and precious collections, and it was funded by Paul Getty Trust. Paul was a very rich business man who viewed art as a civilizing influence in society and strongly believed in making art available to the public for its education and enjoyment. He opened the J. Paul Getty Museum to the public in 1954. This small museum, established in his ranch house in Malibu, housed collections of Greek and Roman antiquities, 18th-century French furniture, and European paintings. Fascinated with the ancient world of the Mediterranean, he later built a Roman-style villa, modeled after the Villa dei Papiri of the first century A.D. When most of Mr. Getty's personal estate passed to the Trust in 1982, the Trustees sought to make a greater contribution to the visual arts through an expanded museum as well as a range of new programs. Getty Center was opened in 1997. http://www.getty.edu/

The admission was free, and we just needed to pay $15 for parking. We took Tram from parking lot to the hilltop Getty Center, and the Tram was computer-operated. It took about 5 minutes to get to the Center.

The buildings and the design of the Center were modern, but we loved its gardens the most. There are 2 gardens, and we loved Central Garden more because it's bigger and has lots of different kinds of flowers and plants.

Kids were not very interested in collections, but they loved to spend time in the family room. We drew, made masks, played with plastic tubes, different mirrors, magnets and more.

It also had free umbrella for travelers to borrow if it's hot outside. We borrowed 2, and they reminded me of 歐巴桑 in summer.

We stayed about 4 hours there, and I took a short video clip :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og7tiw-u_SA. For more photos, please see the slide show on the sidebar.

Tips to cut the cost while enjoying the trip

Cutting the cost doesn't have to sacrifice the quality of the trip! This San Diego/LA trip, we cut the cost and had a better quality trip than ever!

1. Hotel: I highly recommended Priceline.Com! It's such a fun website. If you got familiar with how to use it, you may get very good deal....I couldn't believe that we had stayed at a 4-star hotel with $63 one night!

I have to introduce our hotel rooms because they were unbelievably good:
7/19: Ayres Hotels & Spa Mission Viejo ($72)

2 Queen beds, 2 flat screen TV, a separate family room, and good breakfast.

A short video for the room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru7GwBePdN0

7/20: Courtyard By Marriott Old Town ($58)

Nothing very special about this room, so I didn't take the video clip. It's just a ordinary hotel. Clean, nice, but no "high quality" surprises.

7/21: Omni San Diego ($63)

It's a 4 star hotel, and has a high class bathroom.

The weak points for the last 2 hotels were that they didn't have breakfast and free indoor parking. We had to find a street parking for the Courtyard hotel, and find a parking lot ($8 per night) for Omni. If we want to park indoor in their parking lot: $30 per night! Can you believe it???價格真是“高級”啊!In Omni Hotel, Stephen said that he saw people wearing formal clothes, and even 10 year old boy wore formally.

2. Meals:

We didn't eat in the hotel room. our first night was in Mission Viejo, a brand new area, and even the hotel was 2 month old. There are toll stations around the area, so within few miles of distance, we paid around $5 for tolls. There's no lunch or dinner served inside the hotel, so we walked to the little mall nearby. Most of the restaurants are pizza, sandwiches..., and we didn't like them, so we went to "VONs" (Safeway in Northern CA) to get some frozen dinner. Each person could choose one or two items that they liked, and everyone was very happy and enjoyed the dinner.

Likewise, the second and third hotels didn't have free breakfast, and breakfast would cost $12 per person, so we got driving direction and bought different buns and soy drink from Ranch 99 for day 4 and bought cupcakes, muffins and milk from nearby store for day 5.

3. Admission Tickets:

Getty Center is free with $15 parking fee, but Legoland and Sea World are about $65 for adult and $55 for children over 2. I got a Legoland "buy one get one free" coupon from a friend and got a SeaWorld "Adult for kids price, kids 1/2 price" coupon from another friend. Also, I got information about discount tickets sites and Stephen's company also sells discount tickets (about $15 off). There are many ways to save money if you are willing to look for it!

Out of all the different strategies, I thought that "buy one get one free" coupon worked the best. Therefore, I went to Ebay to find more "buy one get one free" coupons for both parks. I spent $1.50 to get another buy one get one free coupon for Legoland, and we ended up paying only $120 Legoland park admission in total ($65+$55+0+0). I spent $3.50 to get "buy one adult get one kid free" code for SeaWorld online purchase, and paid $130 in total ($65+$65+0+0) for SeaWorld.

Hope our experience can help you in terms of planning for your next vacation!
