7/20 Legoland

After one hour driving from the hotel, we arrived Legoland before 11am. It is a cute place for kids to play because many things were made of Legos or "look like" making from Legos.

Before we went, Hee and I had visited their website for online map and ride introduction to pick up the rides that we would be interested and arranged the routes, so we could skip the routes that we were not interested in and saved some time.

Few minutes after getting in, we saw our first target: Safari Trek. It looked like a train ride, and my 膽小的 kids and I might enjoy. It was about 45 minute waiting time, but the line was not really long, so we got in anyways. It's shorter than 45 minutes, might be only 30 minutes. Kids were doing fine at waiting. Finally, it's our turn to ride, we were so excited; however, the ride was over in less than 5 minutes. I couldn't believe that the ride was so short! It's not worthy to stay 30 minutes in line for this ride.

Then, we went to music fountain. The instruments would play the music only when people stepped on them. Watch a video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWVDSH_eJ54

We've heard of Volvo Driving School from a friend before we visited, so I had told Ha about it, and he wanted to try. Hee was too young for the Driving School, but he didn't want to go to Junior Driving School alone, so he didn't go. In the Driving School, Ha drove the car alone; stepped on gas or brake; stopped at red lights and stop signs, and it was like real driving with other kids on the mini streets. He was doing very well, but again, the time was too short. Fortunately, except for the first ride (Safari Trek), the waiting line was not too long. When they got out of the car, we saw Ha walking toward a girl's car and was helping her with something. Such a gentleman! Later, he told us that the girl didn't know how to untie the seatbelt, so he helped her. Ha loved this ride very much!

Then, we had a lunch at one of the dining centers. After lunch, we went for the factory tour, but again, it's short and it's not very interesting.

Skipper school was a big hit of our day! Kids drove and controlled the boat in a small lake, and parents sat beside them. The lake was not too big, so I didn't expect that it would be a long ride based on the previous experiences of other rides. Ha controlled my boat, and Hee controlled Stephen's boat. It was ok when we just started, and things got funnier and funnier when a little baby driver joined the mess. A video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY7Tn59Y_us
I had so much fun on this ride!!!

On our way to another area, I saw Splash Battle: A family of 4 were on the same boat with water guns to shot other boat and 路人,and 路人 had water gun to shot them as well. Stephen didn't want us to get too wet, so we didn't take the ride, but personally, I thought that it would be a fun ride, too.

Then, we went to Miniland USA. They made a lot of famous buildings by lego blocks. Here were few of them: San Francisco http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXI8LfmzQXY; Los Angeles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtcQKbJGJ2g. We took a Coast Cruise ride to visit the miniland, and it was a longer ride, and we saw some famous buildings in other countries as well.

We also went to Imagination Zone where kids could play with the legos. In Build & Test room, Ha and Hee made lego cars and raced with other kids' cars. Their cars were pretty good. At last, we went to watch a 4D Bob the Builder show. We didn't tell Hee to watch a "movie"; otherwise, he wouldn't go in. We just told him that we were going to watch Bob the Builder, so he went in happily. It was fun, but there were not really many 4D effects in the show. I only saw some fake snow flakes at the end.

Since we were going to have a dinner with Ran's parents, we left Legoland around 4pm. Even though we hadn't finished all the rides that we planned to, we had fun!

Dinner was in San Diego with Sophia's family and Ran's parents. His parents ordered many delicious dishes, and we were so full! Kids also had fun playing and chasing in the room.

7/19 Swimming in the Hotel

After Getty Center, we planned to visit Santa Monica Beach; however, it was about 2pm, and the Sun would be too harmful for our skin, so we decided to go to our hotel first. After a hour of driving, we arrived the hotel; however, when we entered our room, we found that it only had a king bed and a pull-out sofa bed, so we requested a double Queen bed room. The customer service, Becky was patient and nice, and we got the room that we wanted. Then, we explored everything in our room and the area around our room; finally, we were ready to swim at 5pm.

We were the only family in the pool for the most of the time, so we had a lot of fun. Ha could 憋氣 and swim for a short distance, but he hadn't figured out how to 換氣. Hee was still afraid of water, but with Stephen, he enjoyed the time in the water, too.

When it's getting cold, we used the warm spa. Kids were excited about feeling the bubbles coming out of the small holes.

7/19 Getty Center

Getty Center is a museum with marvelus architectures and precious collections, and it was funded by Paul Getty Trust. Paul was a very rich business man who viewed art as a civilizing influence in society and strongly believed in making art available to the public for its education and enjoyment. He opened the J. Paul Getty Museum to the public in 1954. This small museum, established in his ranch house in Malibu, housed collections of Greek and Roman antiquities, 18th-century French furniture, and European paintings. Fascinated with the ancient world of the Mediterranean, he later built a Roman-style villa, modeled after the Villa dei Papiri of the first century A.D. When most of Mr. Getty's personal estate passed to the Trust in 1982, the Trustees sought to make a greater contribution to the visual arts through an expanded museum as well as a range of new programs. Getty Center was opened in 1997. http://www.getty.edu/

The admission was free, and we just needed to pay $15 for parking. We took Tram from parking lot to the hilltop Getty Center, and the Tram was computer-operated. It took about 5 minutes to get to the Center.

The buildings and the design of the Center were modern, but we loved its gardens the most. There are 2 gardens, and we loved Central Garden more because it's bigger and has lots of different kinds of flowers and plants.

Kids were not very interested in collections, but they loved to spend time in the family room. We drew, made masks, played with plastic tubes, different mirrors, magnets and more.

It also had free umbrella for travelers to borrow if it's hot outside. We borrowed 2, and they reminded me of 歐巴桑 in summer.

We stayed about 4 hours there, and I took a short video clip :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=og7tiw-u_SA. For more photos, please see the slide show on the sidebar.

Tips to cut the cost while enjoying the trip

Cutting the cost doesn't have to sacrifice the quality of the trip! This San Diego/LA trip, we cut the cost and had a better quality trip than ever!

1. Hotel: I highly recommended Priceline.Com! It's such a fun website. If you got familiar with how to use it, you may get very good deal....I couldn't believe that we had stayed at a 4-star hotel with $63 one night!

I have to introduce our hotel rooms because they were unbelievably good:
7/19: Ayres Hotels & Spa Mission Viejo ($72)

2 Queen beds, 2 flat screen TV, a separate family room, and good breakfast.

A short video for the room: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ru7GwBePdN0

7/20: Courtyard By Marriott Old Town ($58)

Nothing very special about this room, so I didn't take the video clip. It's just a ordinary hotel. Clean, nice, but no "high quality" surprises.

7/21: Omni San Diego ($63)

It's a 4 star hotel, and has a high class bathroom.

The weak points for the last 2 hotels were that they didn't have breakfast and free indoor parking. We had to find a street parking for the Courtyard hotel, and find a parking lot ($8 per night) for Omni. If we want to park indoor in their parking lot: $30 per night! Can you believe it???價格真是“高級”啊!In Omni Hotel, Stephen said that he saw people wearing formal clothes, and even 10 year old boy wore formally.

2. Meals:

We didn't eat in the hotel room. our first night was in Mission Viejo, a brand new area, and even the hotel was 2 month old. There are toll stations around the area, so within few miles of distance, we paid around $5 for tolls. There's no lunch or dinner served inside the hotel, so we walked to the little mall nearby. Most of the restaurants are pizza, sandwiches..., and we didn't like them, so we went to "VONs" (Safeway in Northern CA) to get some frozen dinner. Each person could choose one or two items that they liked, and everyone was very happy and enjoyed the dinner.

Likewise, the second and third hotels didn't have free breakfast, and breakfast would cost $12 per person, so we got driving direction and bought different buns and soy drink from Ranch 99 for day 4 and bought cupcakes, muffins and milk from nearby store for day 5.

3. Admission Tickets:

Getty Center is free with $15 parking fee, but Legoland and Sea World are about $65 for adult and $55 for children over 2. I got a Legoland "buy one get one free" coupon from a friend and got a SeaWorld "Adult for kids price, kids 1/2 price" coupon from another friend. Also, I got information about discount tickets sites and Stephen's company also sells discount tickets (about $15 off). There are many ways to save money if you are willing to look for it!

Out of all the different strategies, I thought that "buy one get one free" coupon worked the best. Therefore, I went to Ebay to find more "buy one get one free" coupons for both parks. I spent $1.50 to get another buy one get one free coupon for Legoland, and we ended up paying only $120 Legoland park admission in total ($65+$55+0+0). I spent $3.50 to get "buy one adult get one kid free" code for SeaWorld online purchase, and paid $130 in total ($65+$65+0+0) for SeaWorld.

Hope our experience can help you in terms of planning for your next vacation!

7/18- Ben's birthday party, 1st day of LA,San DiegoTrip

We planned to leave our house for the LA/San Diego Trip early in the morning on Sat. 7/18; however, Ha was invited to his best friend, Ben's birthday party on 7/18, so we decided to leave after the party was over, which was about 2pm. The party was in Golfland, and since all the parents left their children alone in the party, I went home to pack for our trip, too, so as soon as Ha came back, we could head to LA immediately.

We left our house around 2:30pm, and Stephen drove highway 85, 101 and 152 and part of highway 5. I continued to drive the rest of highway 5 for about 2 hours, and then, Stephen drove the hill area and drove to the city. This way, each driver could get enough rest and enjoy the scene around the highway. On our way near Gilroy, strong garlic smell went in the car; we saw a beautiful lake and mountains along the way to LA; and the kids and Stephen took a nap while I was driving. I really enjoyed driving on Highway 5: high speed and few cars.

Even though we stopped in McDonald's for around 30 minutes, we still got to LA at about 7:30pm. Thanks to Ran's parents for letting us stay at their apartment in Monterey Park, we didn't have to look far for Chinese food for dinner. We had fried rice, fried noodles and a tofu in a Chinese seafood restaurant nearby, and it was good. Kids were happy for the dinner. For some reason, these ABCs always like to order Fried Rice and Fried Noodles in the Chinese restaurants,真是沒品味!

After dinner, we went straight to the apartment to have a good night sleep. One funny thing: I liked to put our dirty clothes in a plastic bag and bring back home to wash when we were on the trip. On that day, I also collected all the trash in another plastic bag when we left the apartment. I told Stephen that one of the bag was clothes, but he didn't pay attention to what I said. The next day when we were in the hotel, I couldn't find our dirty clothes bag, and we realized that he had put both bags in the big garbage can in the apartment.

My parents and sister's family came to visit us on Sat., so our tent was set up again! It became our official guest room.

The first day, Ha, Dad and Sophia's family were sleeping in the tent, and the second day, Ha and Sophia's family slept in the tent because my parents went home. Hee slept in my room with Stephen, and I slept one night in Ha's room and one night in Hee's room.

Ha and Hee played well with Xin and Ai, and had a water gun fight with Uncle Ran (See video clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Au1n9Mr2klo ). We had roasted the marshmallows, and Ha organized a Christian songs singing concert. We had a great time when they came to visit.

20 Years

7/12 was our 20th anniversary of moving to the U.S.

20 years ago, I was just graduating from High School, and now, I am the mother of 2. 20 years doesn't seem to be a long time; however, when my parents and my sister were talking about the day that we arrived the U.S., my mind was all blank. I didn't remember anything happened when we left the airport in Taiwan, and I didn't remember anything happened when we arrived the SFO. Well, I didn't remember many things happened during these 20 years, either. Fortunately, my family around me, including my parents, my sisters, my husband, and my sons, all have good memories, so they can fill in the blanks of good memories that we shared.

Also, photos helped, too. I can remember the events if I took good amounts of photos during the events. Therefore, I have to have my camera everywhere I go.

In the morning, Ha, Stephen and I were ready for the breakfast, but Hee just refused to come out from the tent because he wanted to live in the tent forever...

Finally, we brought him out, and after breakfast, we started to 收攤. Kids were very helpful, so we finished it very fast. (well, before, we 收攤, Stephen spent a lot of time cleaning up inside the tent and the airbed because usually, when we were in the real camping, we didn't have enough resource and enough time to clean them.)

At noon, we went to my brother/sister-in-law's house and had a lunch, played in their yard, and washed the cars. This was the conclusion of our 3 night camping trip.

7/4 Night: Firework

This year, like most of the years, the City had firework at Cupertino High, and we could watch it from the nearby park and school.

We parked at the Mall and walked to the park in Miller. It's not a short walk, but Hee made it. (Of course, Ha made it, too) Usually, Hee would say that he couldn't walk and asked us to carry him when it's a long walk, but this time, he didn't. I guessed that he's a big kid now.

This year, we had folding chairs, so it's very comfortable to watch the fireworks. Instead of being afraid in the previous years, this year, Ha and Hee started enjoying the fireworks. We had a good view and good time. Hee was yelling and talking at the first half of the show; however, he got quiet gradually....he's fallen asleep! He woke up at 6am in the morning to go to the bathroom, and he didn't take a nap, so he's too tired to enjoy the whole show. Now, we had to carry him back to the parking lot! As we walked back to the parking lot, the sprinkler of the lawn went off, and the crowds were running and laughing; actually, it was very fun!

Here are few video clips about the firework:

7/4 Afternoon:

In the morning, they saw that 修水管的伯伯 went on the roof, so in the afternoon, Stephen asked them if they wanted to take a walk on the roof, too. Ha was afraid, but on the other hand, he wanted to try, so after few minutes of thinking, he went up. Hee was even more scared, but he also wanted to try, so after 10 minutes, when he saw Ha was happy up there, he went, too. Stephen was carefully taking care of them. I went up, but since I got not-so-good shoes, I was scared, so I went down right away. Both kids enjoyed the view, but they couldn't stay long because it's roof, not a playground.

7/4 Morning:修水管

Stephen said: "這個真的很像露營,因為在不一樣的地方洗碗!”

Well, we didn't do it on purpose. We had to use the bathroom sink to wash the dishes because our kitchen sinks were clogged.

Both kitchen sinks haven't worked well for few weeks, but with patience, water could still flow through. During the long weekend, Stephen had more time, so he tried to fix it with the 通水管的snake. It went all the way through, and we thought that the problem was solved; however, on the opposite, the sinks were clogged completely. Not a single drop of water could flow through! I guessed that our snake was too short , and it just pushed everything to the deeper place and got stuck completely. We tried few methods that I searched online: pour in baking soda and vinegar solution; cover one sink and use garbage disposal on the other side; cover one sink and use 通馬桶的那隻東西 on the other side; however, nothing worked at all.

We called our general contractor, and he referred us to 南灣通渠。 He is a Christian, 很客氣,準時,手腳又快,從屋頂通,不到半個鐘頭就完全搞定, so we had time to go to the grand opening of Blackberry Farm which was closed 2 years ago and upgraded and reopened. Kids played some games there, and we walked around and then went home for lunch. City of Cupertino provided free BBQ lunch there, but there were too many people, so we chose to go home and eat. I made pasta with cream of chicken and corn sauce, fast, tasty and easy.

Ha's fallen tooth #3

Ha's tooth #3 (bottom, left to the middle tooth) was fallen on 7/7/09 during breakfast time! He was eating soft bread and avoiding touching the tooth, but he wanted to try our crisp garlic bread. It was yummy so that he forgot to use the other side of teeth to chew, and here came the fallen teeth #3. He acted like nothing happen and just gave me the tooth and continued to eat his garlic bread. I guessed that it was not bleeding.

7/3 Dinner

When we got home from the beach, it was about 3pm, and Ha asked me to cook dinner????? We just finished eating at McDonald's at 2pm, and he finished his double cheese burger, fries and ate some Sundae. I couldn't believe that he asked me to prepare for the dinner.

The fact was that he loved to cook outside, so he couldn't wait for cooking the dinner in the backyard. I told him that I would start preparing at 5:40pm, and he could have dinner at 6pm.
We had 餛飩湯,Ravioli and Tuna fish for dinner.

The Tuna fish was from our next door neighbor, an old couple. I guessed that the husband is about 90 years old, and the wife is almost 90, too. They are always busy at their backyard, and I believed that hard working plus fresh air makes their body healthier. They have corns, lemons, oranges, kiwi, beans, different colors of roses and many other plants in the yard, and they have a boat in the yard, too. The old gentleman told us that they went fishing on 7/2 with his friend's boat. They were 50 miles off shore in Half Moon Bay, and they got a big Tuna fish. He shared the belly part of the Tuna fish with us. It was really good. The first night, I marinated it with salt and pepper and squeezed lemon juice on top when done; the second night, we dipped it with the BBQ sauce, and both were good. No matter how we cooked it, fresh fish is the best!

On Sunday, a friend asked me how many crabs that we caught?(I tried to borrow the net to catch the crab for the camping trip, so they knew it。)I told him that we didn't go, so we didn't get the crab, but we got fresh fish instead. God's provision is amazing! The Lord is my Shepherd, and I shall not be in want! We didn't ask for it, but we got it anyways!

A Video clip of cooking the dinner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTmdUx1CGGs 小菜秧(young 青江菜) was from our backyard. We still have the seeds, if you want some, please let us know.

Hee was dancing after dinner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w6hwRnrXto These VBS songs were played over and over during our camp out days.

7/3 Santa Cruz Boardwalk

We searched online and found that Santa Cruz Boardwalk's temperatures was about 77 degrees at noon, which was better for us to play in the beach, so, with all the "sand tools" in the car, off we went!

Parking fee was $1.5 per hour, so Stephen went to change for the coins, and he got all the one dollar coins with different faces, and one of them was not the round shape.
I was too lazy to play, so I asked Hee to bury me with the sand. He was happy to do that, and I didn't need to move but laid on our 草席。 Stephen also took a rest on the 草席, too. Our kids are old enough to play by themselves, and we can 享享清福了。
Hee decided to bury himself, too, and Ha was building a bridge.
Stephen was like the 撒瑪利亞婦人,在正午打水。
We went to McDonald's for lunch on our way home, and kids slept as soon as we started driving home.

7/3 Breakfast

After a good night sleep in the tent, we enjoyed our breakfast in the yard. it was Ha and Hee ate one each and ate some cereals; Stephen and I ate 3 each. After good breakfast, we were going to the beach!

Camping "Trip"

We planned to go camping with brother & sister-in-law and their friends during the 4th of July long weekend(7/3-7/5). We thought that we were going to Bir Sur, which is about one and half hours away, but in the last minute, we found that we were supposed to go to Sonoma Coast SP, which is 2 and half miles away, and according to the forecast, its temperatures were 60 in the daytime, and 50 at night...very cold. On Thursday night, my sister-in-law called and said that she's not feeling well, so she might not go, so we figured that 1. we didn't know any one in the group; 2. too far; and 3. too cold, so we didn't want to go, either.

We searched State Park camp sites near us, but except for those Walk-in sites, all others were all reserved. Ha was disappointed, but Hee looked ok. I asked him how come he wasn't upset about not going camping, he told me that he didn't like to take shower in the camp ground bathroom because he liked to use the bath tub......

We have packed most of the items for the camping, and Ha and Hee have got their bags ready as well. Ha packed his own clothes and toys, and Hee brought a big bag of stuffed animals. I also prepared all the food items and snacks, too. Well, if that is the case.....instead of putting everything back, Stephen suggested that we could go camping in our backyard. Hee was all excited, but Ha wasn't willing to do that. He was still thinking of the camp fire and beach. No problem! I used the small gas stove to make the camp fire to roast the marshmallows, and we agreed to go to Santa Cruz Boardwalk on Fri., so Ha was happy, too. Originally, we planned to set up the tent on Fri., because our lawn was still wet; however, later, Stephen thought that the lawn was not too wet, so we set up the tent on Thursday night. Besides marshmellows, they also asked for Hot Coco, so we drank hot coco before brushing the teeth. I guessed that in kids' mind, tent, camp fire, smores ( I didn't put the chocolate though), and hot coco equaled to a great camping experience.

Now, every one was happy, and very happy. Ha even said that it was the best camping that he has ever been to. Me, too. It was the best one for me, too. Hee even cried on Sunday morning because he really enjoyed the camping and didn't want to bag the tent.
Here are some of the video clips for our first night(7/2):

Drink the Juice

This was the way they drank the juice or water.......

Pin The Snow White

This was an old video clip stored in my computer, and I almost forgot about it.

It was taken on Ro and Le's birthday party at the end of May. There's a party program similar to "pin the tail", and Stephen managed to pin the Snow White to the exact position:

Hee went to Dylan's Birthday Party

Hee received a birthday party invitation from Dylan, but he never mentioned Dylan before, so I was wondering if he would like to join the party.

I asked him if Dylan is a good boy, he said yes; if he likes Dylan, he said yes; does he want to go to Dylan's birthday party, he said yes, so, off we went!

It was in Dylan's house, so there's not much that kids can play except for a jumping house; however, most kids were shy or scared, and no one wanted to go in. Hee never liked jumping house in his life, so of course, he didn't go in. Fortunately, they prepared many fruit, food and ice cream, so kids just sat there and ate one thing after another. There are not many interactions between them. I couldn't believe that they were in the same class for a year. For moms, we tried to find topics to chat, and since there's nothing else to do, we just kept talking. I was hoping to have any kinds of birthday activities, so we can have something to do, but unfortunately, no.

Finally, it's cake time. The cake was good. It was not American style, nor Chinese style, but it was very good. It had some pudding & strawberries in the middle, and I've never tasted something like that before. After we finished the cake, it's 1pm, so we said good bye and went home.

On 7/18, Ha's best friend will have a birthday party in mini golf land; hopefully, it has more fun.
